GSMF launched the Mineshield programme in May 2004 at the Ashanti Goldfields Mine in Iduapriem, Tarkwa. Mineshield is an HIV/AIDS prevention programme targeted at the mining industry. Present at the launch were all Peer Educators from seven (7) mines that are currently enrolled in the programme. There were representatives from other mining companies who are yet to join Mineshield.
In attendance were prominent personalities such as the Honourable Minister of Mines, Mrs. Cecilia Bannerman; The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines; the First Secretary of the Royal Netherlands Embassy; the Member of Parliament for Tarkwa; the District Chief Executive of the Wassa West District Assembly and the Chief of Tarkwa. Mineshield is being funded by the Royal Netherlands Embassy.
